William Gates was born on 23 May 1768, in Conway, Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America, his father, William Gates, was 39 and his mother, Jane Johanna Rice, was 33. He married Elizabeth Pettus about 1790, in Virginia, United States. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 2 daughters. He died in March 1852, at the age of 83.
