Notes for William Garwood: According to information from the Haines Files, William came to New Jersey in 1687 with his second wife Jane and two sons Thomas and John, They were Quakers. The first record indicating this is from the Friend's Records Quarterly Meeting, London & Middlesex, England: "Marriage, William Garwood of Chalmondiston, Co. of Suffolk, Mariner, son of Thomas of Acton, Co. of Suffolk, 11:27:1680 to Jane Stephens[or Stevens]". A letter is referred to in the Haines files from an Arthur Adams in 1931 that says Thomas became a Quaker between 1660 & 1672 (very early in Quakerism). The first mention of the Garwood family in American Quaker records is from the Shrewsbury Meeting Records (marriage record) where: "Thomas Garwood belonging to Burlington in West Jersey and Jean White living at Shrewsbury in East Jersey on a fifth day of the week at ye Public Meeting house of Friends, Shrewsbury 28 day of 7 mo 1693." The Haines files indicate that the family information from Holbrooke, Co. Suffolk, is from parish records there. Meet the Families of Innskeer, & Garwood, by Ruth Celia Innskeep (1975) provides much of the same information. She says that Chelmondiston is on the SW side of the estuary of Orwell, 6 miles SSE of Ipswich in Suffolk. Acton is 3 miles NNE of Sudbury in Suffolk. She quotes the Suffolk Quarterly Meeting Records (Quaker) that: "Ann Garwood, wife of William of Chelmondiston was buried at Chelmondiston 10 mo. 5, 1679." She further quotes the Friends Record Quarterly Meeting, London and Middlesex marriage record which reads "William Garwood of Chelmondiston, Co. of Suffolk, mariner, son of Thomas of Acton, Co. of Suffolk, Ilth mo. 27, 1680 to Jane Stevens of Spittlefield, dau. of Thomas Stevens of Erdestland, Herefordshire." Jane (Stevens) Garwood's inventory was taken 4 June 1689 which indicates her death date. She also quotes the Suffolk Quarterly Meeting Records for the burial dates of William & Mary Garwood, children of William. The book covers descendents of Thomas Garwood, s/William in some detail but only briefly covers William's son John. Garwood - Van Sciver Genealoqy, by Elizabeth L. Kimble (1979) reports that the marriage to Jane Stephens took place at the Devonshire House Monthly Meeting in London, It goes on to say that an account given by Elias Farr of Burlington Co. New Jersey says that William & Jane Garwood were indebted to him and that he had lent money to Jane before and after their marriage. (is there a relationship there?) One loan was to bring their goods to London and a years rent on a house. Mrs Kimble thinks that the Garwood's goods were loaded on the "Thomas & Ann" which loaded on 14 Jun 1681 in London and that the family arrived about Oct 1681. Quaker records show that Jane Garwood attended the marriage of William Surridge to Mary Wickliff in Burlington on 10 Nov 1681. She says that "all agree that William Garwood was dead by 1687." She mentions that in Elias Farr's account he has a doctor bill and a funeral for which he provided money in 1687. She calls attention to the inventory of "William Garret, late of the County of Suffolk, England, Mariner, deceased." The appraisel was by Richard Bassnett and Thomas Gardiner, both of Burlington Co. On 20 Jan 1687 Jane Garret, widow, Elias Farr and Richard Bassnett signed a bond for the inventory. The actual signature was Jane Garwood so a clerical error was made. The inventory included:

1 rug 1 blanket 1 coverlet 5 sheets 1 table cloth 4 napkins 1 heater 2 earthen jugs 2 brass kettles 1 jack some old iron 1 warming pan 1 pair tongs 1 chest 4 small pewter dishes 1 brass ladle w/skimmer 1 pair old andirons 1 hat 1 set curtains 1 brass pot 1 spit 1 white apron 3 handkerchiefs 4 pillow cases 1 pewter chamber pot 2 porridgers 6 spoons 1 saucer 1 old Bible 1 box of iron 1 old barrel wllock 1 dripping pan 12 pounds iron 1 suit clothes 1 gun 1 roll linen cloth 4 handtowels l pairshoes 1 table 1 old cubbord The book lists that Jane Garwood got "the widow's half" of 1 cow, 2 steers, 2 young calves and "the widow's third" of her husband's inventory. An extract of the will (1690/2) of Jane (Stephens) Garwood, of Burlington Co., is in Vol. XXIII of the New Jersey Archives. She makes bequests to stepsons Thomas and John Garwood and to her sister the wife of Charles Baggely. Her executor was Sarah, the widow of Elias Farr, who in her will of 5 Aug 1698 makes bequests to Thomas Garwood and his children William and Mary and to John Garwood and his children Jacob and John (Vol. XXIII). There may have been a relationship here. Sarah may have been the sister of Jane (Stephens) Garwood. Thomas would have been about 23 when his stepmother died which was old enough to be her administrator and there had to be a reason for selecting Sarah. The Kimble book, above, gives the date of Jane's death and says that Elias Farr was the administrator. She says that in June 1690 that the court ordered Farr to hold the balance of the estate "until those it belonged to legally made their appearance in court." Elias Farr died in 1691 and in 1692, she says, that Charles Bagley, acting for his wife, Elizabeth, Jane's sister, and Thomas and John Garwood; requested that Sarah Farr, widow of Elias give an accounting. Sarah Farr did and paid Thomas and John Garwood f3.0.1 and 3 farthings. William died shortly after his arrival in New Jersey and an inventory of his estate was made 7 Jan 1687/8 in Burlington Co. New Jersey. Ruth C. Innskeep (above) assumes that William died at sea on the voyage to America because the settlement of his estate said he was "late of Suffolk Co., England, bound for West Jersey, mariner. Other notes: William Garwood, born Abt. 1629 in Chelmondiston, Suffolk County, England; died January 17, 1687/88 in at sea, on the way to the U.S.A.; married (1) Annie Rowe December 30, 1658 in Holbrook, Suffolk, England; married (2) Jane Stevens January 27, 1679/80 in London, England.
