He held a certificate of competency to teach, was of good moral character, and was hired by the school board in Carnesville in 1859.

  The 1870 TN Census shows Wm. A.'s occupation as a carpenter. The Hardman Co. TN 1880 Census shows his occupation as a farmer.
  According to Asley Fowler (Uncle Tye)'s dialogue recorded on a cassette tape 12/4/73, he fought in the Civil War. Moved to Eastern Tennessee, Carnesville after the war because Sherman's march through Georgia had destroyed everything. Grandpa Fowler became a tanner and a shoemaker.
