Military[3] War of 1812

William Thomas Ford filed a claim for a pension in the War of 1812 on 12 Aug 1871 from Iowa City, IA. In it, he states he was 75 years old and that he was drafted into the service as William Ford in, he thought, Capt. Johnson's Company of the Virginia Militia He was enrolled at Bridgeport, Harrison Co., Virginia in May 1812 or 1813 and was supposed to have served 27 months in the service. However, due to his lack of memory, he could not recall the necessary facts to support his pension claim and it was later disallowed. According to his pension declaration:

"...he was a private; that he joined Gen. Wm H.Harrison's command at the Black Swamps at the mouth of the Maumee river, was at Detroit and at the battle of the Thames in Canada, and that his Colonels name was Johnson and was the man who was said to have killed Tecumseh; that he cannot recall the letter of his company or what his Regt was called nor his brigade or division; that he thinks one of his captain's names was also Johnson, but he cannot remember definitely as his memory is very infirm."

Also, his pension declaration clarifies his name:

"That his name was William Thomas Ford, and that he was drafted and served as William Ford, but on returning home at the close of the war an uncle from whom he took the name Thomas insisted that he should drop the name William and retain Thomas only, which he complied with under the premise that said uncle would make him some presents or do something for him."
