William Fletcher's origins have yet to be established. The age given when he died suggests that he was born around 1738. His first confirmed sighting is on 18th October 1764, when he married Sarah Welsh at Kensworth in Hertfordshire. They went on to have seven children baptised at Kensworth between 1767 and 1785.

William died in 1814 and was buried at Kensworth on 17th January 1814. He was said to be 75 years old. It seems likely there was an illness in the family, as Sarah was buried the very next day.
