The William who married Mary Martin in 1760, is believed to be the son of John Elkington of Newton Harcourt who married Hannah Stone of Kilby. This William was baptized 21 Feb 1736/37 (ie Julian Celendar) at Great Wigston. The parentse died very shortly afterwards, and the child William was supported by trustees and guardians by means of a bequest from his grandmother Judith Stone who died in 1738. He moved to Kilby. She gives her moiety of 7 messuages in Leicester and Sileby to her grandson William Elkington, together with £50 and a futher 150 shillings towards his maintenance, to the trustees and guardians of the said William Elkington. He left a will in 1797. Reference: 1797 Was not proved until 1819: In his Will he appoints his son William sole executor, and leaves him his tenement and real estate and his number 2 Knitting Frame, to his son John his leaves his number 1 Knitting Frame. Witnesses were: John Stone, John Martin and John Ward. |
