1864 - The following excerpt comes from The Star - Ballarat, 16 December 1864; "...William Dalton, sexton of St Paul's Church, a member of the Ballarat Fire Brigade, and for many years a respected inhabitant of Ballarat, died suddenly, and under peculiar circumstances, at Lake Wendouree, on Thursday morning. At about eleven o'clock he was called upon by some friends to accompany them in a rowing excursion on the lake. With these, Frederick Palmer, James and John Edwards and William Fearey he proceeded on foot to Edwards' boathouse..."
