ID: I04918 Name: William Marion CURTIS Sex: M Birth: 8 MAR 1804 in Pendleton District,SC, near Anderson Death: 26 SEP 1887 in Gordon Co, Ga. Burial: Curtis Cem., Gordon Co., Ga Reference Number: 4918 Note:

According to Max Curtis, of Calhoun, Gordon County, GA, great-grandson of William Curtis, it was probably a typical Feb 1st, 1835 day, when they arrived in what was to become Gordon County. He came with his great-grandmother Martha Boone Curtis, and their four young sons. one of which is his grandfather. His great great-grandmother Mildred "Milly" also came to live with the family there.

He appeared on the 1810 census, Pendleton District, SC. 1830 census Pickens Co., SC Called for Jury duty in Mar 1831 in Pickens, Co., SC. 1840 census in Carroll Co., GA. 1850, 1860, 1870 census in Gordon Co., GA. Was Road Reviewer between 1850 and 1855 in Gordon Co., GA

Over the years he bought several pieces of property, one of which was located on the Old Atlanta Road at the corner of what today is near the east end of Peters Street and Curtis Parkway. The old house was built around 1850 and stood near the median of what today is I-75. It was known until the 1970's as Curtis Cross Roads and joined the old Atlanta Road which turned due south with what is now known as Lovers Lane Road and Boone Ford Road to the east. The old house was torn down in the mid 70's when I-75 was being constructed. When it was torn down it was the residence of the widow of one of the oldest grandsons, Dr William Marion Curtis who died in 1930 at age 83. Dr Curtis was the son of William's oldest son James Marion Curtis.

Several of the family married and moved to Rome and Atlanta areas, some becoming Pharmacist and Dentist, yet some chose to remain in Gordon County. Their extended families remained in Gordon County with names like Stone, Gaines, Bryant, Ferguson and Barrett.

A note on the Curtis Family Cemetery. Located somewhat behind the GA State Patrol Office on Lovers lane. It is said to be originally an indian burial ground. There is a large stone-encased area, which is the Curtis area. Martha Boone, buried here is said to be a relative of the famous "Daniel Boone", whose feats have reached story book proportion.
