married Sarah, daughter of William and Esther Har- wood. John, a brother of hers, was killed in Lovewell's fight, 1725, at Pequawket. Mr. Cummings himself was one of the forty-six or forty-seven men who started on that expedition. But near the island at the mouth of the Contoocook — the scene of Hannah Dustin's famous exploit, he was disabled by an old wound and sent home under charge of his kinsman, Josiah Cummings (22). In 1734, he received £10 on account of having been wounded in the country's service. He was assessed in Nottingham West in 1733. But there is a record of land deeded to him Jan. 7, 1722-3, on the east side of the Merrimac, a part of the farm known as "the Joseph Hills farm." He sold land there in 1751. He was deacon in the church. In 1752, the town voted "to give Deacon William Cummings, for wolves killed last year, the same sum of money which was allowed per head this year." He died Aug. 29, 1757.
