"A Pioneer Passes"
William Crumrine, a pioneer of Blackhawk county, died at his home in East Waterloo township, near Elk Run, yesterday, of an attack of the grip with complications of the heart.
Mr. Crumrine was one of the earliest settlers of this neighborhood. He moved from near Springfield, Ohio, to Blackhawk county in 1852, nearly a half century ago, locating on a farm in section six, East Waterloo township, and he lived continuously on the same farm until his death. He was born Oct. 19, 1834, near Springfield, Ohio. In 1856 he was married to Mary Koch, who survives with four sons and four daughters. One son, Fred Crumrine, died not long ago. The four sons living are Henry, living in Cedar township; Walter, in Poyner; Emanuel, in East Waterloo, and Q. R. at home. The daughters are Mrs. Mary Neilsen of Freeborn county, Minn.; Mrs. Hattie Turner of Cedar township, and Misses Jane and Emma at home. Deceased also leaves two brothers, James Crumrine of Sioux City, and George Crumrine, who lived in Nebraska. A sister, Mrs. Catherine Krebs, also lived in Nebraska.
The widow is now seriously sick at her home.
Rev. H. G. Beeman will conduct the funeral services at the late residence tomorrow at 10 o'clock and burial will be in the Cedar township cemetery, on the Washburn road.
Deceased lived to see the wonderful material development of this section from the time it was little more than a dreary prairie to its present prosperous condition, with a great and busy city near, sprung up as by magic in the few intervening years, and the farms all settled and tilled to a high state of perfection.
Mr. Crumrine was highly esteemed by his neighbors and his loss is sincerely grieved by them as well as by the more intimate relatives.
