William G. "Bill" Congleton, 84, Frankfort, died at 7:03 a.m. Aug. 5, 2008, at Wesley Manor.
Mr. Congleton was a 1942 graduate of Jackson Township High School and took agriculture short courses at Purdue University. He was a farmer and a lifelong Clinton County resident. He was a member of First Christian Church, Paul Harris Foundation and a former member of Rotary.
He helped organize the Indiana Pork Producers Association and the National Pork Producers Council in the 1950s. He served on the board of the Indiana Pork Producers, 1960-1979, and as president in 1974 and 1975. He also served on the National Livestock and Meat Board from 1975 to 1988 and on the executive board from 1980 to 1988 and was president of the Pork Industry Group in 1974 and 1975. His awards include Prairie Farmer Master Farmer of Excellence for Community Service 1978; Commercial Producer of the Year by the National Swine Improvement Federation in 1979; Meritorious Service Award by Indiana Pork Producers in 1982; and The Pork Industry Award by the National Hog Farmer Magazine in 1985.
In 1979 he was given membership in The Honor Society of Agriculture by Gamma Sigma Delta at Purdue University.
He was born July 17, 1924, in Frankfort to Mark and Lula (Gray) Congleton. He married Ermal L. Laughner on May 4, 1947, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 4, 2006.
Surviving are one son, Mike (Lana) Congleton of Frankfort; one daughter, Lynn (Larry) Williams of Newtown, Conn.; three sisters, Mary Ann Carter of Sacramento, Calif., Nancy (Don) Kinsler of Frankfort and Jane Quick of Lebanon; five grandchildren, Tory Daines, Kristin Daines, Tim Congleton, Aaron Congleton and Adam Congleton; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and one sister.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church with Pam Ditson-McCall officiating. Family will receive friends following the service. Private family burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
