In 1861 with the outbreak of the Civil War William sold his mercantile business and organized the First Eastern Shore Maryland Volunteers of which he was Lt Colonel and James Wallace was Colonel. The unit fought at "Little Round Top" at Gettysburg on 3 July 1863 and "Succeeded in checking and finally repulsing the enemy which retired in great confusion and ceased any further attack. This was the last great struggle on the part of the south, and the war was effectively at an end."
