Facts and Events
William Wirt Comegys said; He is a "son of Cornelius and Charity --- Comegys." [C1353] "He was born at or near Warwick, Cecil County in the year 1734." "The writer has no documentary evidence with which to establish the fact, but it has been handed down in the family... that this William Comegys was a soldier in the French and Indian War, was with Washington at Braddock Defeat in 1755 and was wounded in the hand." "William Comegys married (firstly), widow of Major Harrington from Delaware, a soldier in the Revolutionary war. Major Harrington was killed at the battle of Germantown, Oct 4, 1777. By this marriage there was no issue." "He married (secondly), Martha, daughter of John Anschom Hooper Dorchester Co., Maryland. John Anschom Hooper was commissioned First Lieutenant in Stafford's Company, 14th Battalion of Militia from Caroline county, June 24, 1777." Poeter said he was [C 1353] a son of Cornelius [C 135] and Charity Death. All of these claims are suspect and none of them can be substantiated. This William Comegys [UC 6] is not William Comegys [C 1353] son of Cornelius Comegys and Charity Death. William [C 1353] died before 10 Jun 1767 when his estate inventoried for probate by his wife Alethea --?--. His brothers Jacob and Bartus signed his inventory as nearest of kin and his brother Bartus and step father Phileman Pratt signed the administration bond for his wife Alethea. The parents of this William Comegys [UC 6] are unresolved. The William Comegys that married Elizabeth Worthington Etherington [UCF [71]] is probably the William Comegys UCF [72]] that died in Appoquinimink Hundred, New Castle County DE in 1816. No evidence has been found to indicate that this William Comegys [UC 6] was married before he married Martha --?-- the widow of Richard Lyndon. The records of French and Indian War, that have been found, do not indicate any Comegys involvement. No Major Harrington has been discovered. The closest discovered is a John Harrigan, private 9th Co 13th Battalion Kent County militia, and a John Harrington from Mispillon Hundred DE who died testate either in 1786 or 1798. He had no know military service. Served in Captain John Dean's Company from Queen Anne's County in the Revolutionary War. This was part of "Flying Camp". References
