- 8 July 1772; Rowan County, N.C. Deed Book 8, Page 54: This Indenture, made the eighth Day of July in the twelfth Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord GEORGE the Third, & in the year of our Lord one Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Two BETWEEN William Temple Coles, Esquire of Rowan County in the Province of North Carolina of the one Part, and ALEXANDER MARTIN Atto. At Law, and of the Same Place of the other Part, Witnesseth, That for and in Consideration of the sum of Five pounds proclamation Money by the sd. Alexander Martin to the sd. William Temple Coles in hand paid, the Receipt Whereof is hereby fully Acknowledged; he the sd. William Temple Coles hath Given, Granted, Bargained & Sold, & by these presents, Doth Give, Grant, Bargain & Sell, unto the sd. Alexander Martin his heirs and assigns, a Certain piece or Parcel of Land Lying & being in the Town of Salisbury. Beginning on Corbin Street at a Stake fifteen poles S. West from the S. West Corner of Lot Number eight in the West Square, of the said Town, Reference being had to the plan of sd. Town will more fully and at Large Appear Running Along the said Street S. West to a Stake twelve Poles, thence N. West twenty four Poles to a Stake, thence N. East, twelve Poles to a Stake thence S. East twenty containing two hundred & Eighty Eight Square poles, or two Lotts of Land. To the only proper Use & Behoof of the sd. Alexander Martin his Heirs & assigns for ever. To Have & to hold, the afsd. Two Lots of Land, with the Appurtenances, and all Rights, Previleges and Improvements to the Same, in any-wise belonging to him the sd. Alexander Martin his Heirs and Assigns, forever, And the sd. William Temple Coles for himself, & his Heirs & Assigns, Doth hereby Covenant and agree, to and with the sd. Alexander Martin that he the sd. Alexander Martin and his heirs & Assigns, Shall & may for ever hereafter, Peaceably & Quietly have, hold, occupy, Possess & Enjoy, the aforegranted Land and premises, Without the Let or Molestation of any person Whatsoever, and free & Clear from all, & all Manner of Incumbrance Whatsoever & the sd. Wiliam Temple Coles Doth oblige himself and his Heirs, Executors, & Admrs. To Warrant & Defend the afore-granted Lands & premises to him the sd. Alexander Martin & his Heirs & Assigns, for ever, against the Claim of all Persons, Whatsoever, In Witness Whereof, the sd. William Temple Coles hath hereunto set his hand & Seal the Day & year first Above Written.
