http://www.rbhayes.org/hayes/mssfind/285/caldwell.htm Introduction The collection is composed primarily of correspondence and business papers of several generations of the William Caldwell family of Fremont, Ohio. Biographical Sketch The William Caldwell family has its origins in Pennsylvania: however, in 1787 the family moved to Kentucky and in 1806 to Chillicothe, Ohio. William Caldwell, Sr., a gunsmith, served in the War of 1812 and was part of Hull’s army at the surrender of Detroit. Following the war, Caldwell moved to Columbus, Ohio, and in 1832 he brought his family north to Ottawa County. With them was William Sutherd Caldwell, Jr. who was born in Chillicothe in 1808. After several years in Elmore, William S. Caldwell moved to Fremont where he married Jane Davis. In 1850, William Jr. and his brother Robert Harvey left for the California gold fields. Robert died there in 1853. William returned to Elmore that same year. He later served as a justice of the peace, township treasurer, and Ottawa County probate judge. William and Jane (Davis) Caldwell were the parents of four children: Charles, who died in Fremont in 1852; Robert H., who was killed at the Battle of Stones River at the age of 22; William Clinton, a noted Fremont physician who served as the Assistant Surgeon of the 72nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War; and Juliet, who attended Oberlin College and resided in Elmore and Fremont. Although married in 1870 in Ottawa County to David Dewey by her father, Juliet filed for and received a divorce decree from him in 1872. She died in 1900 in Battle Creek, Michigan. |
