DEATH: Blackburn's Transcripts of Whitechapel M.I.s in Bradford Library; "William Brook, Knowl, Wyke, d. 26 Aug 1835, aged 65 & 6 children died in infancy". Cleckheaton (Whitechapel) Parish Reg.; 1827-37, Burials, 31 Aug 1835, William Brook, Knowl, Wike, 65. BIOGRAPHICAL: Clothier, living at Knowl, Wyke, from birth of son James May 1801 to death in 1835. From 1796 to 1799 referred to simply as "Clothier, Wike". Parentage uncertain. Most probably son of William Brook, bpt.23 Mar 1754, (s. William Brooke, Wike) bur 16 Jul 1819, 65, at Whitechapel (who also had a son Joseph, b.1783, d.15 Apr 1803, 21st year). Grandparents were almost certainly William & Mary (nee Kitson) Brook mentioned in deeds below as evidenced by Birstall Baptism 21 Nov 1831, William s. William Brook, Wike. Among "6 children died in infancy" we can identify Thomas (bur.24 Dec 1815, 3 days); Matthew (bur.1.1.1816,1); John (bur.21.1.1816,1); David bur.12.1. 1819,6). From evidence in West Yorks. Registry of Deeds, Wakefield, we know that Brook(e)s were living at Knowl in 1830: SUMMARY OF WILL OF JOHN SUGDEN, THE ELDER, OF OAKENSHAW, CLOTHMAKER, DIED 1810 (from photocopy in possession of Euan Pearson, obtained from Borthwick Institute, York, by M.Bertha Long. To William I devise my farm house and part of barn & other outhouses (except close of land mentioned hereinafter) called New Popplewell, now in occupation of William Parkin and myself, subject to payment of legacy of £50, interest after rate of 5% p.a. to be paid by William by 2 equal half-yearly payments to my daughter Hannah, wife of William Brook, during term of her natural life, and immediately after her death to her son, John Brook, if he shall attain 21 years. But if he dies during his mother's lifetime, or before 21, to be shared equally among his brothers & sisters as they attain age of 21. I charge said messuage, lands, barn, etc. with further sum of £40 to daughter Hannah Brook to be paid by William 12 months after my death. Residue of my personal estate I bequeath equally between William & Matthew. I revoke all former wills and appoint my nephew Joseph Sugden of Oakenshaw, Clothmaker, & William Brook of Wike, Clothmaker, joint execs. 21 November 1810. John X Sugden, his mark. And also 1 parcel of land containing half-an-acre or thereabouts lying in west end of a close called East Croft in Wike then in occupation of Michael Ambler. Also a close commonly called The Chapel Ing, containing by estimation 1 day's ploughing, in Cleckheaton, now in tenure of Michael Ambler. Also 1 day's ploughing of land in town field of Cleckheaton, commonly called Chairbarrows, in uppermost sall(?) with 1 plot of land commonly called the Thornpot. CLECKHEATON GUARDIAN, 15 Dec 1893: Notes: Oakenshaw & Scholes:... Clothmaking very common at beginning of century. Some rude looms still linger in barn corners of which 2 men used to work. He that caught the shuttle well with left hand being allowed 1 penny a day extra... 1835 Poll Book lists William BROOK at Knowl, Wyke. William BROOK, 1769/70-1835, and his wife Hanah, 1774/5-1844, "of Knowle, Wyke" were buried at Whitechapel, Cleckheaton. Children
