William Brears was a railway man in Calgary Alberta. Before the Field tunnel was built, he had the good fortune to sutvive 2 run-away trains - both times having to jump for his life, suffering broken legs. He retired to Howick and bought his father-in-law's farm and Newbridge store. He was a Mason and Hon Honorary member of the Calgary Stampede. He organized the first United Co-op - their meetings held in the Newbridge store.
