He was married in 1858 to Mary Elizabeth Landis (sweetest and best of women) of English and French parentage. Myfather left Tennessee and settled in Cape Giradeau, near the town of that name. The Civil war broke out and being a "Union man" it became necessary for him to go farther north; he settled in LaClede County and joined the Union Army andafterwards returned to the farm. He was prosperous until my mother died in 1867, after which he seemed unsettled. spent a number of years in California.
