Death records 13769/1886 BENNETT WILLIAM AGE 85 YEARS DIED MILTON MILTON http://www.convictrecords.com.au/ships/claudine/1829 William Bennett, one of 180 convicts transported on the Claudine, 19 August 1829 Convicted at: Middlesex Gaol Delivery Occupation: Reaper Crime: Smuggling Sentence Term: Life Convict - convicted to life 10 April 1828 - departed on the "Claudine" 19 August 1829.\r\rWilliam's Marriage Certificate says he was a widower when he married Elizabeth Hallen in Sydney in 1835.\r\rI have not found proof of his birth or parents. I also have not found proof of his arrival, although other decendents have decided he was possibly the Mr Bennett listed as a passenger on the cargo ship "William Lockerby" which arrived in Sydney in 1834. The name & date fit but !!!!!\r\rAfter his wife Elizabeth died in 1863, William went at some time to live in Milton?Ulladulla, where their daughter, Mary Lydia Illett & her husband George lived.\r\rIn a book 1988' compiled by the Milton/ Ulladulla & District Historical Society, William appears on the Electoral roll of persons qualified to vote for the election of member of the Legislative Assembly, in the year 1874-75, for the Electoral district of Shoalhaven. His residence is given as Ulladulla.\r\rWhich means he had moved to the area before that date, but when?\r\rA child, Charles was born & died beteen 1836 & 1839 (according to William's death certificate) but no registration for the birth or death has been found.\r\rEdward, born 4 June 1849, Stockton, died 19 Oct 1849, Stockton, Newcastle, NSW, Australia.\r\rWilliam & Elizabeth's sons William & Charles are reported to have made the bricks which were used to build St John's Church, Terara,Shoalhaven, assisted by two of their sisters, who wheeled the clay etc., used. If this is so then the family had arrived in the Shoalhaven sometime between 1847 when Lucy H. was born in the Newcastle area & 26th July, 1856 when the church in Terara was opened for services.\r\rThe last child,Jane M was bornin1851, according to her marriage & death certificates, but cannot find a registration for her therefore her birth place is unknown as yet, although the death certificate says she was born in Newcastle!!! If this is true perhaps they were moving south at this time & Jane M's birth was just not registered.
