Personal History
William was born in 1885 at 17 Somerset Place, Teignmouth Devon, where his mother ran a boarding house. He was the fourth child of James and Charlotte Bennett. William lived at Somerset Place until the death of his parents in 1908-1909 upon which he moved to 15 Model Cottages, Teignmouth.
On 18 June 1910 William enrolled in the British Army for an initial period of four years extending this for a further two years in June 1914. He was now Driver 1575 of the Wessex 4th Brg RFA, becoming Bombardier on 29 August 1914. According to his military records, William was never posted abroad.
During this time William married Lilian Dyer in the spring of 1912 and they had set up home at 12 Devonshire Place, Teignmouth. William and Lilian had five children, two of whom died in infancy.
William was discharged from the army on 13 June 1916 as he was no longer physically fit for service due to a lung and airways disease, caused by gases he had breathed in during his military service. Sadly William died from the disease on 14 July 1919 and was laid to rest at Teignmouth Cemetery.
