William Bedford was one of the early settlers of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the new world. Jametown was established in 1606. William arrived in the year 1621 on the ship "Little James" which sailed from Southampton, England. William brought with him 40 bushels of corn, 2 pigs, 3 pounds of gun powder, 60 pounds of lead, 4 muskets, 3 pieces of armor, and 2 swords. A census taken in 1623 shows William to be one of a few more than 1,000 settlers in all of Virginia. That same year William inherited the estate of a William Enry of London, a stock holder of the Virginia Company, including 100 acres of land.
