William's name has been shown as William Gunther, Gus and Girth. Descendants has given the name William Andrew, known as Girth. His birth year has been shown as: 1836, 1838, 1840, and 1842 The year 1836 is probably correct as his first child was born in 1858. Girth served in the Army of the Confederacy, Company K, 29th Tennessee Infantry. He appears on the 1880 and 1900 Hawkins County, and 1910 Carter County, Tennessee, Census Records.
He was married three times: 1st, prior to 1878 to Susan Mayo, daughter of Reuben Mayo of Hawkins Co., TN. They had at least one son together, Christopher Beckner, (born 1 Jul 1878 in Hawkins Co., TN). A descendant has noted that there was a strong tie to the Mayo family in early years. On the 1880 census, a Matilda Mayo is listed as a sister-in-Iaw.
"Girth" married (2nd) Mary Matilda LEE on 29 Mar 1888 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. They had 2 children: + 170. M vii. Guyon Thomas BECKNER, born 27 Oct 1889, died 28 Aug 1964. 171. F viii. Elsie M. BECKNER, born Sep 1891 in Tennessee. She married Ralph Leroy ESTES 24 Feb 1915, in Johnson County, Indiana.
"Girth" married (3rd) to Minerva Anderson on 24 Dec 1898 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. She was born Nov 1871 in North Carolina.
