William Martin Bates died of disease July 12, 1962, at Knoxville, Tennessee, while serving as a private of Company "A" - 39th Georgia Infantry. Jasper Milton Bates <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~juliusbates/jasper.htm> On July 14, 2001 at Tucumcari, NM, Camp 1441, NM SCV Camps 1385 and 1826, Company C, 4th Texas Volunteers, and Texas SCV Camp 1613 commemorated the dedication of the headstone for Corporal Bates. Gary Bates, a member of Company C and Camp 1441 provided the dedication address -- it is a moving speech that represents the views of all present.
