William Harvey Barnhill was a Civil war veteran. He served in the 30th Iowa infantry, company C. and was wounded at the battle of Vicksburg on May 23, 1863. On August 10th of that same year he was captured while foraging on Black River road by the confederate army. He was sent to Richmond, Va. on August 22nd where he was held for six months. On Feb. 21 1864 he was sent to the newly opened Andersonville prison in Ga. where he was held for over a year. In Feb. of 1865 he was paroled and sent to the US Army Hospital in Annapolis Md. to recuperate for several months. In June of 1965 he mustered out of the service in Ohio and went back home to Iowa.
