From a document written by the family's German pastor before leaving Germany: Johann Curt Wilhelm Awe, son of the weaver Johann Joachim Friedrich Awe and his first wife Johanne Caroline Lonife, nee Werner, was born in Trittelvitz in a county of the province of Pomerania on April 29 and baptized on 4 April 1850.

Obituary for his father states, "He was married the first time in 1842. This union was blessed with four children. The wife and one child died forty-one years ago. In 1853 he was married the second time, which union was rewarded with five children."
