William Alsop, Jr. died in 1788 and his obituary was published on January 16, 1788 by the Virginia Independent Chronicle, a newspaper of Richmond, Virginia:
"On Monday the seventh instant departed this life, William Alsop of Hanover County, near the Merry Oak, in the 97th year of his life. He retained his memory and senses in uncommon perfection in his last moments; his old age was remarkably vigorous, though he was very intemperate in the use of spirituous liguors, the bad effects of which were perhaps in a great measure counteracted by a life of laborious industry"
