William Allis [#24], s/o Samuel Allis [#3] and Alice ---, b. Hatfield Oct. 19, 1680, d. Montague 20 Feb 1763, m. 1703-4 [first child b. 1705] Elizabeth Davis of Northampton. [Note: it is not explained how this William was differentiated from his cousin. Some sources seem unsure (e.g., see Source:Smith, John Montague. History (1673-1899) of the Town of Sunderland, Massachusetts, p. 251, which says William of Sunderland is "son of John (2) b. 1684, but perhaps more probably son of Samuel ... b. Oct. 19, 1680"; or see Source:Leonard, Ermina Newton. Newton Genealogy, p. 89) which comments "b. 1680 if son of Samuel ... b. 1684 [if son of John] ... He was son of either John or Samuel"). Based on presentation in this source, the man who married Elizabeth 1703-1704 is probably the one b. 1680, the other being barely of age, or slightly under age. The man who married Mary Griswold in 1709 named a son John. Further research may turn up additional clues or evidence.]

- ↑ Source:Hampshire, Massachusetts, United States. Deeds, 1787-1900, under title "Land grants 1663-1786 vol 1", p. 258, 18 Oct 1729: Ichabod Allis, Eleazer Allis, Thankfull Allis and Experience Allis, all of Hatfield; William Allis of Sunderland; John & Mary Smead of Deerfield for £4 convey to Obadiah Dickinson of Hatfield two 5-acre rights "originally William Allis's & John Allis's of Hatfield Deceased. Thankful, Experience and Mary Smead are the daughters of Joseph Allis, son of John. Ichabod and Eleazer are sons of John. In 1729, William Allis of Sunderland would be the man who married Elizabeth Davis, while his cousin would have been of Connecticut at the time.
The William Allis who owned one of the 5-acre lots is not well-identified in this deed, since it is ambiguous if the description "of Hatfield Deceased" applies to both him and John, or just to John. - If the grantee William is the same as William the seller, the seller could be the son of John or the son of Samuel. Though in that case, it is not clear why both parties would participate in a single deed, since the land was not held in common, nor were they adjacent parcels. - If, on the other hand, the William to whom the land was granted is deceased, and not the same as William the seller, the seller would appear to hold the land in common with the other sellers, which suggests he was the son of John, selling land inherited from his father and grandfather. This is opposite of the arrangement that is given in the Allis Genealogy.
