William Allen's origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is on 17th June 1697 when he was married to Sarah Rubbins at Kirkby la Thorpe in Lincolnshire. They had five children baptised at Kirkby la Thorpe between 1699 and 1706, although the youngest two both died young. Some of the baptisms describe William as a labourer. It appears that William's wife Sarah died between the time of their youngest son's baptism in January 1706 and his burial in February 1707.

It is possible William married again shortly afterwards to a Bridget, but not certain as no marriage record has been found. There was a Robert son of William baptised and buried at Kirkby la Thorpe in July 1708, followed in October that year by the burial of a Bridget wife of William.

In 1709 William married again to a Mary Allison. They married on 20th February 1709 at Grantham, fifteen miles south-west of Kirkby la Thorpe. After their marriage they returned to Kirkby la Thorpe, having a son called James baptised there in 1713. They may also have been the parents of a Mary Allen baptised at Kirkby la Thorpe in 1710, whose baptism does not name her parents.

William died in 1720, being buried at Kirkby la Thorpe on 29th August 1720. Mary survived him by seven years.

It is possible that this Bridget was wife of this William, as he appears, but their marriage needs to be found to confirm. They may well have been the parents of the Robert Allen who was born and died in 1708 but whose mother is not named on either his baptism or burial records.
