Facts and Events
Sarah Standifer LDS microfilm notes gives name and birth date. Patti Paine Alexander writes me he was with the Virginia Army and went in as a 2nd Lt. as he was educated in a military school. He went into the Battle of the Wilderness, one of the greatest fought during the Civil War, and when his Captain was killed, he took his place. Then his Colonel was killed, and he took his place. He was then killed, and many of his comrades told of his daring bravery , said his courage was marvelous, and a braver soldier never went into battle. This additional information was given to Patti by Morelle Wash Credille - "Asa was a member of Company 20th Georgia Volunteers. Had misunderstanding with Dr. Thomas in Ft. Gaines Guards and joined at Georgetown (Patti thinks this is correct) May 13, 1861. Sunday afternoon at Petersburg 10 miles from Richmond 11:00 opened fire, whipped Yankees. Yankees were so scared they went off and left their dead. Surrendered 9th day of April 1865." Her information is from Patti Wash Brannon and Morelle Wash Credille. He must have been called Asa and this last bit about joining the Georgia Volunteers must have happened before his being with the Virginia Army. When was the Battle of the Wilderness? |
