Like his father James GARNETT, William GARNETT was also a Captain in the colonial militia in 1753 and a justice of Essex County, Virginia. He resided with his family at a plantation called "Stone Chimney" upon a thousand acre tract of land located on the Rappahannock River near the present post office of Champlain.

William and “Nancy” GARNETT had only three daughters, namely: Sarah "Sally" GARNETT [b. 1752], Mildred "Milly" GARNETT [b. 1754] and Anne GARNETT [b. 1758]. All three of these daughters were very young when their father William GARNETT died prematurely at the age of just 32 years on February 21, 1759.

The following notes written by Doug Garrnett, descendant: Captain William Garnett's tombstone [now defaced] has the following inscription: "Here lyeth Captain William Garnett who departed this life the 21st of February 1759 aged [defaced and unreadable age]. He was married to Anne Rowzee on the 19th of June 1751 by whom he had three daughters: Sally, Milly and Anne Garnett. This tombstone is placed here at the expense and order of ... " [here it appears that someone has intentionally chiseled out the remaining inscription so as to obscure the name of the party who bore the expense of erecting the tombstone].

In 1771, the residual estate of William GARNETT was divised to his widow, Mrs. Ann GARNETT as well as to Mr. William HUNTER and Sarah [nee GARNETT] his wife, and also to Miss Milly GARNETT. The beneficiaries of this will attested that they divided the slaves of the late William GARNETT, gentleman, among his widow and two daughters according to the above agreement. This account was dated December 13, 1771. [Will Book, Number 12, page 472, Essex County].

From the probate records for the settlement of William GARNETT’s estate, it appears that the third daughter, Anne GARNETT [b. 1758] must have died before reaching adult age, and so only the other two daughters received a portion of their father’s residual property.

The eldest daughter Sarah "Sally" GARNETT married William HUNTER on August 15, 1771 and eventually had six children born between 1773 and 1783.

The younger of the two surviving daughters, Mildred "Milly" GARNETT, ( from Library of Virginia catalog, Virginia Herald, Fredericksburg, Va Died- On Monday last Mrs. Milley Jackson, wife of Mr. William Jackson of Fredericksburg pub Thurs. November 27, 1788) married William JACKSON in about 1773, (from library of VA catalog, Virginia Herald and Fredericksburg advertiser, source pub.
