Parentage

The Whitmell Stephens who married Nancy is usually said to be the son of Joshua, although Joshua's brother Solomon also had a son named Whitmell, born at about the same time. It should be noted that the Whitmell who married Nancy had a daughter named Tempy, as well as sons named Elijah, James and Henry, presumably for his mother and brothers. However, it is also worth noting that the Whitmell Stephens who married Elizabeth was in Scott County, Tennessee in 1860, while Elijah, a known son of Joshua, was there in 1870. Better documentation confirming the parentage of the two Whitmells would be helpful.

Whichever Whitmell was the son of Joshua, he served as one of the Administrator's of his father's estate in 1855. He also signed a deed of sale in settlement of a suit in Chancery over the estate of Joshua Stephen's in 1858.
