Wesley Roll was a farmer by vocation and lived on the old Smith homestead lying on the old Springfield Road, between Springfield and Scotch Plains. The property passed out of the possession of the family in the early seventies and is not the well known "Cook Farm." The original house in which his wife and his children prior to Charles W. were born, was torn down and the present one erected during the life of Wesley Roll. The latter house is also the birthplace of Anna Mary Roll Wilson, the only grandchild born in the old homestead. His land is intersected by the boundary line between Fanwood and Westfield Townships. (302) During his life, Wesley Roll owned and worked negro slaves, one of whom was lnown as Henry Vanderveer, who, just previous to the Civil War, ran away to Elizabethtown, but as the great question of abolition was then at its height, no effort was made to reclaim him. One of the latter's descendants of the same name was for a long time a truckman in Elizabeth, N. J. Wesley Roll during his life was also known as Vesley, which name he used in his will.
