. Biography of Watson J Eldredge

Much can be speculated at the Eldredge heritage. His father carries the name Adams which could indicate US Presidential background, although this can not be proven at this time.

The name Eldredge can be traced back to William Eldred of Yarmouth, Barnstable, MA. It is most likely that he descended from Thomas Eldred of Knattishal in Suffolk, England. The name Eldred can be traced back to Saxon Origin when tribes did not have surnames, instead referring themselves to a single descriptive name, Eldred being the Saxon noun for "The Terrible". Other notable Eldreds include Edred the King of England 946-955, youngest son of Edward the Elder who ruled 899-925. In 1066 Harold II was crowned by the Archbishop of Canterbury, an Eldred. However, following the Norman Conquest of England any Eldreds who held any position of power were practically wiped out and any remaining were made Norman serfs. Since the Normans did not keep records of their serfs it will never be known what exactly what happened during the next 400 years.

Watson was born in 1859 to John Adams and Anne (Watson) Eldredge. He was the second, first son, of five, possibly six children. The exact number of siblings is unsure as two conflicting census returns states five and six children. We do however know that this six child would have died before 1900 as only three children survived beyond this year.
Little is known about our man during his childhood other than the fact that he attended school, could read and write and that his father was a labourer. It is therefore safe to assume that times may have been tough, his father possibly being unemployed during certain times of the year.
By 1880 Watson had moved away from home and lived in the household of John Lype, a farmer suffering from Rhumatism. He is listed in the census as a General Labourer so my guess is that he worked for his landlord.

In 1890 we find Watson married to Florence Mary Jackson, who was born in Chicago, IL but from Irish background. While evidence suggests that they were married around 1885 the date of marriage is much more likely around 1889 or early 1890 when Florence was aged about 18 or 19. In 1891 they had their first child, Florence, with their third and final child arriving in 1897. Florence was taken into hospital in November 1899 and developed pneumonia and eventually died in Dceember, leaving Watson to cope with three children under that age of 8. It is my speculation that he was unable to cope with the upbringing of these children as we find him in the Rifenberg household. His son, George can be found living with his Grandparents, Watsons Parents, while his daughters, Florence and Gladys, moved in with Aunts and Uncles.

It is not known what happened to Watson after this date, but evidence points to a death in1909 at the age of 50, unknown cause.

  40. 1880 Census - Relationship with Head, Labourer. Head of Household, John Lype was a Farmer, so it is likely that Watson was a General Labourer employed by Mr. Lype. It is likely that Watson lived as part of the household assisting with most household tasks, since it is known from the 1880 census that John Lype suffered with Rhumatism.
