Aulden was inducted into the US Army on July 1, 1943. Served in the South Pacific Theatre and was part of the clean-up troops after the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshimo, Japan. Honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant January 11, 1946. Worked as an electrical engineer for Republic Steel Mines in Beckley, WV and Elkhorn, KY until retirement. Presently living at 208 Murray Street, Beckley, WV 25801. Children are Carolyn Sue Martin Looney born January 20, 1944; Walter Edward Martin born December 31, 1947; and Elizabeth Catherine Martin Walker born January 9, 1949. Walter Aulden Martin, age 89, of Beckley died Friday, June 15, 2007, at his home after an extended illness.

Born March 24, 1918, in Fayette County, he was the son of the late Walter Franklin and Mable Clara Legg Martin. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Lillian Elizabeth Bailey; three brothers, Theodore, Donald and Chester Max Martin; and one sister, Helen Metrick.

He is survived by his beloved companion of many years, Helen Petrosky of Beckley; one son, Walter Edward Martin and his wife Judy of Hardy, Ky.; two daughters, Carolyn Sue Looney and her husband Willie, of Elkhorn City, Ky., and Elizabeth Kay Bowling and her husband Doug, of Rock; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Martin was a member of the Bradley Freewill Baptist Church at Bradley; he was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army from July 1943 until January 1946, mostly in the South Pacific Theater. He was a member of the first American cleanup force to enter Hiroshima, Japan, after the atomic bomb was exploded. Mr. Martin worked for Republic Steel for more than 30 years serving as chief electrician for their coal mines at Beckley and at Elkhorn City, Ky., until his retirement in 1981.

Pallbearers will be the grandsons and grandsons-in-law: Jon Walter Looney, William Looney, Martin Walker, Craig (Dawn) McNew, Michael (Cindy) Robinson, Danny (Heather) Justice, and an honorary pallbearer and special friend, William (Bill) Alexander.

Friends may gather with the family today, Monday, June 18, from the hours of 6 until 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at Blue Ridge Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 19, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Daniel Legg officiating.

Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with graveside military rites conducted by the Oak Hill VFW.
