Walter Goodenow, the father of Mrs. S.C. Thompson died of heart failure in a hunting camp, about twenty-five miles up the Little Manistee River, Saturday evening, where he and four companions - Messrs. Charles Powell and Albert Porter of this city, Isaac Goodenow of Berlin, Mich., and W. H. Cole of Hinsdale, ILL. - were preparing to break camp and return to their respective homes. On the evening of his death Mr. Goodenow appeared to be in his usual health and spirits until he apparently fell into a peaceful sleep; which his only companion in the camp at the time - Charles Powell - soon learned was the sleep of death. Mr. Powell came to the city on foot the same night, to notify the relatives of Mr. Goodenow of his death, and the remains were brought to the residence of his daughter in Manistee township, on the following morning. The deceased was 70 years of age, and had resided in this city about fifteen years. He was a very quiet, inoffensive old gentleman, who enjoyed the esteem of all who knew him. the funeral services were held Tuesday a.m. at Mr. Thompson's residence in Manistee township, Rev. Brodie conducting them, and the remains were taken to Illinois for interment.
Dec. 2, 1892 Mrs. Stacy C. Thompson left Tuesday with the remains of her father, the late Walter Goodenough, for Hillsdale, Illinois, where they were interred by the side of those of her mother.

One of Albion's prominent 19th century families, now extinct locally, was the Goodenow family. Brothers Decatur Henry (1844-1923) and Emory E. (1845-1919) Goodenow operated a dry goods store in Albion for many years, on the south-east corner of Cass and Superior Streets. Walter Goodenow, their uncle, operated the Goodenow House, another name for the Hotel Albion in the late 1860's and early 1870's. The January 11, 1884 issue of the Albion Republican reported that Goodenow's had moved their dry goods store to just south of Sheldon & Robertson's bank. The Goodenow brothers were the sons of Jacob (1819-1891) and Louisa (1825-1899) Goodenow. Jacob was a shoemaker. Emory Goodenow had two sons and two daughters, Leon (1879-1942), Maizie (1881-1968), Georgia (1883-1961) and A. Ardene (1889-1961).
