Walter BUCHANAN was born 30jan1797 at Glasgow and died 1883 at Shandon, Dunb.; Walter’s siblings were late Andrew Buchanan (1798-1882), MD, Medicine Professor at Glasgow University, and Francis (d. young) (Memoirs and portraits of 100 Glasgow men, glasgowstory). Walter was possibly son of Andrew Buchanan and Margaret Cockburn, who married 22sep1794 at Glasgow (Latter day saints), and had a child Andrew in 1798 (IGI). Scottish archives have the will of Walter Buchanan, sometime of Shandon, Dunb., sometime MP for City of Glasgow, and Merchant there, thereafter res. at The Baths, Helensburgh, d. 21may1883 at Plas Newton, nr. Chester, reg. 1883 Dumbarton (scotlandspeople). Walter Buchanan (b. 1797) died 2nd qtr 1883 at Chester (bmd). Walter married (1) Mary HAMILTON, daughter of James Hamilton of Cessnock, sister of his future partners, William Hamilton of Minard and James Hamilton of Middleton, 20apr1824 at Govan or Glasgow (Latter day saints). Walter married (2) Christina Laura SMITH, daughter of James Smith, FRS, of Jordanhill, Renfrews. (Old country houses of the old Glasgow gentry). Christina had a daughter who married James George Smith of Liverpool (Glasgow Herald 23may1883). In 1841 PO Directory lists Walter Buchanan of Buchanan, Hamilton and Co., merchants, 74 Buchanan St. In 1861 and 1871 Walter Buchanan (1797) was at Dunbartons (census).
