Enlisted at age 17 in Confederate Army July, 1863 at Houston, MS. He was assigned to Company C, 6th Mississippi Cavalry, Starke's Brigade, Chalmer's Division, Forrest's Cavalry Corps, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. On February 18, 1865, the 6th Cavalry was merged with the 8th Mississippi Cavalry, and he was assigned to Company I in the 8th Miss. Cavalry. His company commanders were Capt. W.W. Robertson & Col. William L. Duff. He was on furlough at home in Cumberland for 30 days when his command surrendered at Selmer, AL. in 1865. (This information was on a pension application dated 8/25/1904). Mississippi records show that the 8th Cavalry surrendered at Citronelle, AL on May 4, 1865.

March 22 - April 1, 1865 - With the 8th Cavalry, he saw action against Wilson's Raid from Chickasaw county to Maplesville, AL.

March 3l, 1865 - Action near Montevallo, AL.

April 1, 1865 - Action at Ebenezer Church near Maplesville, AL.
