Ritter, 21st Technical School Squadron(Sp.), is back in uniform at 43 anxious to meet in combat the enemy hehelped conquer 24 years ago. Now an aircraft armorer student, Pvt.Ritter still treasures four awards for his service in the first WorldWar. In August, 1918, during the bloody battle of Chateau-Thierry, Pvt.Ritter carried out a vital bit of liason work under heavy enemy fire.Shrapnel tugged at his sleeves, cut through his hand, but he completedhis dangerous mission successfully. The following day a buddy pointedout a hole in Pvt. Ritter's blouse. Inside he found a piece of shrapnellodged in a blank message book over his heart. Today he wears the SilverStar for "conspicuous gallantry in action". Fought at Chateau-ThierryEnlisting in June, 1917, Pvt. Ritter received his "baptism of fire" atAlsace-Lorraine. From this action he moved with the Allied forces in thegreat drive around Chateau-Thierry, then fought through that offensivefrom Belleau Wood to the Vesle River. Soon afterward he moved with hisoutfit, the 125th Infantry, as a part of a spearhead for the Soissonsoffensive. He was wounded for the second time when two machine gunbullets pierced his left arm. He later received the Order of the PurpleHeart, and now wears two wound chevrons. Following six weeks in thehospital, Pvt. Ritter rejoined his division - now dubbed "Les Terribles"by the French for its successful spearheading of the Soissonsoffensive-just in time to see action at the beginning of the last greatAllied offensive of the war, the Meuse-Argonne drive. Two Sons in NavySoon after the Armistice he marched into Germany with the Army ofOccupation, where he remained until April, 1919.
