Dave,

No, Solomon Hale is not my ancestor. My gg grandparents Vinton Hale & Elizabeth Smith had 11 children: Elva, Marquis, Solomon, Sarah, John Riley, George, William, Marshall, Peter Frank, Martha, & Nathan Harvey. My g grandfather was Marquis, have wondered if the name might come from the Marquis family that was all over Virginia. I'm about 99 percent certain Solomon Smith & Catherine Hartsook were Elizabeth's parents. I've wondered about DNA testing with the Rupe family. I had the Gallia Co. website doing all kinds of lookups to no avail. Solomon last showed up in the 1860 census, assumed he died in the 1860's, but was told there was no will, no cemetery record, & no obit. I am assuming Catherine died between 1840 & 1846 because he has a wife in the 1840 census, but remarried in 1846. He was the only adult Solomon Smith in the county at that time. There is a Solomon Smith who is 20 years old in the 1850 census, don't know if he might be a son. All I know about the family is that they were strict Baptists & active in the community. That info came from a bio on Mary Smith Rupe. I question something you have on a group sheet on Ancestry.com. You list an Elijah born ca 1795. Where did you get that? I've encountered the Elijah born Feb. 28, 1798 in Washington Co. Maryland, married Elizabeth Steidley, died Green Co. Ohio. His father was a William, but that William married Catherine Folger. I've found people from this line & it's a different William whom they believe only had 3 children. I've also found a lady from the Maria Elizabeth line who says she went by Elizabeth. That gave me hope Catherine might have named a daughter after her sister.

Another story I just heard about says the William in Augusta Co, Virginia family came from Holland. This lady had stories written down about the family in Gallia Co & a grandson of this William told of 6 brothers coming from Holland, settling in Pennsylvania & Maryland. I'm hoping to hear more from her. Kathy
