!BIRTH-MARRIAGE-CHILDREN-CENSUS-DEATH: Stephen A. White, DICTIONNAIRE GENEALOGIQUE DES FAMILLES ACADIENNES; 1636-1714; Moncton, New Brunswick, Centre d'Etudes Acadiennes, 1999, 2 vols.; p. 270; own copy. #1: Vincent BREAU (BROT), born around 1631, a "laboreur," married around 1661 to Marie BOURG, daughter of Antoine & Antoinette LANDRY; twelve children. G. MASSIGNON cites a baptismal sponsor (La Chaussée, Poitou, France Register) of Vincent BREAU for Madeleine BRUN, daughter of Vincent & Vincende (sic for Renée) BREAU on 25 Jan 1645. It is probably this man*. However, a note explains that (due to dispensations) he could not be the brother or nephew of the Renée BREAU who was married to Vincent BRUN. So his parents are unknown. He died between Nov 1684 and Jan 1686.

*See other notes - this is likely not true. Also, whether he was born 1629 or 1631, it does not seem likely that he was a baptismal sponsor in 1645. Also note that according to Généalogie des Français d'Amérique du Nord, Vincent Brun & Vincende Breau/Brault was a different couple from Vincent Brun and Renée Breau.

!PARENTS-CHRISTENING-IMMIGRATION: "The Acadian MICHEL (MITCHEL Family," in ACADIAN GENEALOGY EXCHANGE; ; vol. 25, nos. 2 & 3 (Apr & Jul 1996); p. 50; own copy. Vincent BREAUX or BRAULT was baptized 29 May 1629 in St. Clement Parish, St. Jean-de-Sauves, Vienne, France, son of René BRAULT & Marie RENAUME. He came to America [sic] about 1652 among colonists recruited by Charles de MENOU de Charnisay, Lord of Aulnay, then Royal Governor of Acadia.

!BIRTH-IMMIGRATION: Robert Brault, "Vincent Brault," translated from LES AMITIÉS GÉNÉOLOGIQUES CANADIENNES-FRANCAISES (Jun 2000), in ACADIAN GENEALOGY EXCHANGE; vol. XXX, no. 1 (May 2001); pp. 24-25. Letter from Clarence-J. d'ENTREMONT in 1983 is cited proving that the Vincent BRAULT of the 1671 census in Acadia cannot be the same as was baptized 28 May 1629 at Saint-Clement church (today Saint-Jean-de-Sauves), near La Chaussee, Vienne, France, son of Rene BRAULT & Marie RENAULME. This man with his mother was witness to his brother's marriage at St. Paul church in Coussay (near La Chaussee) on 21 Jan 1674.

Born in 1631, name spelled Vincent BRAULT (also BREAUX), originally from La Chaussée in the Loudun region, department of Vienne, France. He arrived in Acadia around 1652, married around 1661 to Marie BOURG; eleven children.

!BIRTH-PARENTS-MARRIAGE-DEATH: Giselle Gregoire-Rustenburg, GEDCOM file (MAC); 1600-1950; Aug 1995; # 582; sent disk by mail. Vincent (BREAUX) BRAULT, born 29 May 1629 [sic] at St. Jean de Sauves, France. Married in 1661 at Port Royal to Marie BOURG. Died after [sic, should be just before] 1686. [Who were parents?]

PARENTS-SIBLING: Did he have an older sister name (Marie) Renée BRAUD, married to Vincent BRUN ABT 1644? [S.A. WHITE argues against this in his Dictionnaire.] Was their father also named Vincent? Is there any possibility that the wife of Jehan TERRIAU (Jean THERIOT) was not Perrine RAU, but BREAU or BRAULT?

!CENSUS: 1678, Clarence J. d'Entremont, "Recensement de Port-Royal," in MEMOIRES DE LA SOCIETE GENEALOGIQUE CANADIENNE-FRANCAISE; vol. 22, no. 4; p. 233; sent by PERSI in Jun 1999. On Folio 20, first entry: Vincelot BERAUD & Marie BOURG, with four boys and two girls. They have 3 arpents of land, with 5 head of cattle.

CENSUS: 1686, Port Royal, Acadia, not listed, but must have just died, because Marie BOURC "veuve de Vincent BREAU" is listed with her 10 children, the youngest only 2 months old.

"Among the names in the census of 1671 is that of Vincent Brot, aged 40. His wife was Marie Bourc, and they had four children, two boys, Antoine and Pierre, and two girls. I have been unable to find any further mention of this name in any census or other Acadian document, and am therefore forced to the conclusion that Brot is not a name, but a misprint or an error of the copyist, and that it stands for some other name such as Breau or Brou. This idea is strengthened by finding the name Breau both at Port Royal and Mines in 1714. In 1730 among those who signed the oath of allegiance at Port Royal were Jean Brou and Pierre Brou and Jean and Ambroise Breau. Among those deported from Mines in 1755 by Wins low were Cherussim Braux and Francis Braux. We also find the name of Breau represented at Beausejour in 1752 by one family from Petitcodiac, two from Shepody and one from Mines. I think that it may be safely inferred that Brot is an error and that the name of Antoine Bourc's son-in-law was Vincent Breau. Brou and Braux appear to be different ways of spelling the same name, for among people like the Acadian peasants, most of whom could neither read or write, the spelling of names must have varied a good deal. In 1720 Peter Brou was named by Governor Philipps as a proper person to represent the inhabitants of Mines at a conference with him at Annapolis. Here we have another spelling of the name Breau. There are now a few families of this name in the Maritime Provinces, about 30 in all, who spell their name Breaux. They are all residents of Northumberland. Breans are quite numerous among the French, but whether this is a mis-spelling of Breau or not I am not prepared to say."
