Victor was a butcher by trade and owned Pepper's Market in Saratoga. He died at a relatively young age, leaving Blanche with three young children. Victor's parents both died at relatively young ages also, John at 44 and Mary at 43. Victor was only a teenager so he was taken in by his Uncle Walter Pepper and Aunt Lulu (Krautheimer) and raised by them. This agrees with Barbara Pepper LaMarque's recollection. In 1920 Walter, Lulu and Victor, age 13 were living on 83 Henry St.; Victor was shown as a son. John and Mary had died in 1916 and 1919. In the 1929 City Directory Walter, Lulu and Victor were living at 83 Lake Ave. Victor was manager of a store at 27-28 Caroline St. The 1930 census showed Walter, Lulu and Victor living at 50 Bryan St. Victor was manager of a meat market. Victor and Blanche are buried in Greenridge Cemetery in Saratoga. I have recently (26 Sep 2005) received from Barbara Pepper LaMarque copies of the papers for her father, Victor, to be adopted by his aunt and uncle. What is amazing is the parallel to what happened to Blanche. Apparently after Victor's mother, Mary, died in 1916 his Uncle Walter and Aunt Lulu took him in and on the 29th of November adopted him. Of course this did not necessitate any change of name as it did with Blanche (from Boomhower to Foucher). At this time, his father John Henry was still alive and apparently agreed and consented to the adoption. This is in contrast to Blanche's adoption where her father did not learn of it until it was a fait accompli. |
