"BUCKSPORT - Vernon George "Turk" Wardwell Sr., 85, died surrounded by his loving family, April 6, 2006, at his home. He was born Dec. 15, 1920, in Bucksport, son of Harry D. and Edith (Allison). He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1938-1942 and married Charlotte Lorraine Gilley in 1942. A proud World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942-1945, where he was stationed in Panama, and was a lifetime member of the V.F.W Post No. 4597. After his tour of duty, he lived in Hartford, Conn. and worked for Stanley and Colt Firearms Co. He moved back to Orrington and worked at Eastern Fine Paper Co., Brewer, for 21 years, then worked for IMC, Orrington, until his retirement in 1985. A lifelong learner, he was proud of returning to school and achieving his G.E.D. at age 30, graduating at the top of his class. An avid fisherman, hunter and golfer, he enjoyed the last 20 years arriving at the golf course at dawn, playing many years at Pine Hill Golf Club, Orrington and wintering in Zephyrhills, Fla., where he also enjoyed the early light of dawn on the golf courses and and his many friends. He was loved by many close family members and lifelong friends, and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his children, Donna Belkakis and her husband, Tom, Vernon "Butch" Wardwell Jr. and his wife, Betty, Suzanne Lachance, Brenda Brann and her husband, Bill; grandchildren, Karl Holmes, Courtney Mikle, Danielle Moskowitz, Mikk Wardwell, Christopher Wardwell; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Avis Shaw, Lillian Goss; brother, Francis Wardwell; aunt, Ruth Kettel; several nieces and nephews. Vernon will be sadly missed by his extended family, Vicki and Bill Dulong. He was predeceased by his youngest son, Michael Wardwell; brother, Forrest Wardwell; second wife, Leona Wardwell. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, April 10, 2006, at the Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport. Visitation will be noon until time of service. Interment with military honors will be in Riverview Cemetery, Bucksport. A gathering of conversation and refreshment will follow at the home of Vicki and Bill Delong, Eastside Drive, Verona Island.
