Reed was born on November 13, 1912, in Bryant, Indiana. In his younger days he grew up in southern Illinois, where he attended grade school, high school and college. In his younger years he like to hunt and fish and while attending high school in Marion, Illinois, he was on the track team as a pole vaulter and was a medalist for all four years in high school. Reed attended Southern Illinois Normal University for four years and also competed on their track team, where he was a medalist each year and held the school pole vault record for three years. Reed transferred all his credits to University of Illinois and graduated two years later with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation he went to work for the IBM Corp. working as a field manager and retired after 35 years of service in June of 1975. Reed is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary (Butts) Tullis, whom he married in 1941; daughter, Bonnie (Bob) Wicks of Maumee; brother, Cline (Doris) Tullis of Zepherhilla, FL; grandchildren, Bryan (Melissa) Wicks of Richmond, VA, and Renee (Jeff) Noftz of Bowling Green, OH. Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Adam and Chloe Wicks and Jordon Noftz. Friends may call at the Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Ave. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 28th, from 2-9 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home Wednesday at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
