At an early age, Uriah's family was killed by the Indians and he was taken captive. He lived with the Indians until a white family saw him and bought him from the Indians. Uriah remembered his name and that he was born in Pennsylvania in April 1790. The people who took him from the Indians permitted him to keep his surname.
