Ashcraft, Uriah (R278), 24 Oct 1833.S2

Affidavit, Harrison County, Virginia.

Uriah Ashcraft, born 6 Apr 1762 [his father's pension application says 1765 -- which would make him 13 yrs old at enlistment] in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, states that while resident in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, he enlisted in Aug 1778 and served intermittantly as a private and Indian spy under Capt. Moses Sutton, Capt. John Hayden, Capt. Robert Ritchie, Col. John McClelland, and Col. Crawford until late 1780. He moved in 1781 to Harrison County, Virginia, and rendered similar service in 1781 through 1783 (15 months, total) under Capt. Manuel Brown, Capt. Herbert, Capt. Evans, Capt. George Jackson, "and others," and Cols. Bradford, Darke, Martain, and William Lowther.

Upon interrogation by the U.S. District Attorney in 1834, he stated that he served one month in Capt. Robert Ritchie's company (Jul 1782), one month in Capt. Brown's company (fall 1782), one month in Capt. Evans's company (Apr 1783), another month in Capt' Evans's company (summer 1783), and about twenty days scouting in the fall of 1783.

Claim disallowed as "fraudulent" (probably for insufficient service).
