He must have died in 1858 or 1859, as Matilda has a one year old child with the name Eliza Slocum on the 1860 census. Further, they may have married sometime around 1850, as Matilda has a daughter named Mary Slocum, age 10, a son, J (or I) W Slocum, age 7, on the 1860 census. Of course, Mr. Slocum could have had a prior wife.
