Some researchers have listed the parents of Elijah, James and Robert McClanahan as John McClanahan and Agnes McChubit, but based upon the birthdates of John and Agnes and the approximate birthdates of Elijah, James and Robert, it appears that the brothers may be too old to have been children of this couple. Several researchers have looked into their parentage without success. More research is necessary to conclusively prove the parents of Elijah, James and Robert McClanahan.

JOHN McCLANAHAN, who is believed to be a son of Thomas and Dorothy, married Agnes McChubit. Their children were Elijah, Robert, John, Agnes, William, James, Ann, Andrew, and Charles. Elijah was married to Ann Ewing and they lived in a place named Cowpasture, Virginia. Elijah and Ann's children were Mary, Margaret, William and a son who was killed by Indians. Elijah's son, William, was wounded 13 times as a soldier of the American Revolution at the battle of Cowpens and Buford's Defeat; William's son Thomas was also a soldier. In 1780 William settled in Big Lick, now Roanoke, Virginia.

Elijah's daughter, Margaret married John Crockett and she was the grandmother of Davy Crockett. It is said that Davy Crockett weighed 200 pounds at age 8 with his feet clean and his stomach empty. Davy was an Indian fighter, a congressman, a sportsman of great legend and he died defending the Alamo. Davy Crockett would be 3rd cousin, 6 times removed from the grandchildren of Susie Cornelia Thomas Sandel, the author's grandmother.
