Lisa has the right of it! There were 7 Hallowell/Hollowell families in the 1850 census for Windsor, Kennebec County and several Merrils too.The Orrin L. who was a 3 yr old was later married toa girl named Emily Hallowell on Feb 17, 1872- Maine State Archives roll 2,vol 4,p 261. She next appeared in the the North Windsor Cemetery- d. on 6 Nov,1873 at age 20 yrs ,9 mos.The Orrin who was 5 in the 1850 census was a child of William and Rachael( I presume Merrill)Hallowell. It looks like John and Hannah Merrill were Rachael's parents.I could find John and Hannah Merrill on page 3271 of the North Windsor Cemetery but had no luck with Orrin's parents.In the meantime Orrin F. had married Sarah Adelaide "Gerale"in c.1869. In both the 1900 and the 1870 census she is listed as being born in Maine so I tried any close spelling to that name and came up with-Gerald1850 census for Albion, Kennebec- done 2 Sept-page 269-Owen Gerald- age 38, FarmerAlvira- 35Ansel R.-16Almeida B.-14Mary J.-12Henry S.-10Roselia B.-8Sarah A.-7AngelineB.-3Harriet E.-1male infant- 3/12I didn't get in to the 1860 census since it is not indexed yet but I did find Orrin and Sarah in the 1870 census-recorded- 28 July,1870- Swan Township, Marion County-Hollowell, O.F.- age 25, Blacksmith, b. MaineS.A.- age 26 Housekeeping,b.MaineAngie- age 8/12- at home,b.IowaLogan, Jas.-age 30,Carpenter,b/Ill.Watts, Russell- age 32, Cattlebroker,b.Ky.It is interesting to note that the male Merrill who lived right next door to Orrin in the 1850 census was a Blacksmith.The 1900 census of Pleasantville, Marion Co.,Iowa- page 196a-Hollowell, Orrin- head,Aug 1846, age 53,married 31 years,b.Maine, parents also ,Blacksmith---------, Sarah A.-wife,March 1845,m.31 yrs,7 ch/7 living,b.Maine,parents also---------, Herbert O.-son Sept 1880,age 19,single,b.Iowa---------, Flossie M.-dau Feb 1883,age 17,single,b.Iowa---------, Harry C(?)-son Sept 1885, age 11,single,b.IowaChandler, Sylvia J.-dau Oct 1873, age 26, married, W.,2 ch/1 living,b. Iowa--------, Fern- g-dau (to Orrin)-July 1898,age 1,single,b.Iowa,fa-Iowa,mo-IowaI can send the printouts to the 1850 census and all the Merrills and Hallowells/Hollowells in the Windsor cemetery if you need them. It might help you figure out who Orrin's grandparents were on the Hollowell side.
