"When the estate of John Charles of Branford was distributed in 1673, a share went to John Peat for the children he had by his deceased wife, a dau. of Charles. It is uncertain what John Peat this was. It is well established that John, Jr., m. Sarah Osborn, and almost equally certain that she was mother of his seven children. The children of John Charles (except the dau. who m. Peat) were all born in the 1630's and 1640's. It is a question whether he could have had a dau. old enough to be wife of John Peat, Sr., and mother of the two sons, neither of whom could have been born much later than 1640. These sons were adults with families of their own in 1673, and ought to have been mentioned as receiving the Charles legacy in their own right if they were the gr. children, instead of their father receiving it for them. Granting that it was possible for Charles to have had a dau. born by abt. 1620, she would have been over 20 yrs. younger than John Peat, Sr., and just old enough to be mother of his sons. The fact that John Charles, Jr., lived a few years in Stratford agrees with the assumption that his sister m. a Stratford Peat. Perhaps the Charles girl was a second wife of John Peat, Sr., and had daus. by him. But the evidence at hand is insufficient for a positive conclusion."
