Udo was a very trim, in shape man. He worked as foreman in a Suhl ceramics company, Schelgelmilch, that existed for 50-60 years until the end of WW 2. The fine china products are now collectors' items, per Fritz and Inge. They showed us several pieces of the china while visiting in their home in Suhl.

He was also the "last of the Suhl farmers," per Werner Wackes. Udo had a large plot of land in the section of Suhl called Hehloh ("high ground") where he grew vegetables. Ruth and I were taken to see the plot by Werner and his daughter Liane in 9/98.

Udo lived at Russenstrasse 7 in the north-east side of Suhl. He inherited the house from his father Johann Wilhelm Otto. It is now the home of Udo's younger son, Herbert Siegfried Wackes.
